Lower Manhattan:
While the terms "Lower Manhattan" and "Downtown"
are roughly synonymous, "Downtown" may have
different meanings to different people, especially depending
on what part of NY City they live in. It would only
refer to the Financial District, but could refer to
the neighborhoods including Battery Park City, Tribeca,
and most of Chinatown (the area south of Canal St.)
Generally, Greenwich Village, East Village, and SOHO
are not considered as a part of Downtown - while they
could be a part of Lower Manhattan. Boundaries and names
of neighborhood are often somewhat ambiguous and confusing
in Manhattan.
