TRAVEL TIPS

For most, a visit to New York City begins with one of three New York airports; namely, John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, or La Guardia Airport. Air-Ride provide you with up-to-the minute information on how to reach your destination from any of New York's airport. Learn More
Manhattan Island is approximately 2 miles wide and 12 miles long. The southern part of the island contains most of the business, economic, entertainment and cultural sights of New York. The north of Central Park is Harlem. Central Park, located at the very center of the island, plays a roll to neatly divide Manhattan into two sections. This site covers mostly landmarks and points of interest along some of Manhattan's famous streets in the southern half of Manhattan.
The southern tip of the island is called "Downtown" and the section directly south of Central Park is called "Midtown". Everything from the middle of the park to the northern tip of the island is normally called "Uptown". The part of the island east of 5th Avenue is called the "East Side" and the part closer to the Hudson River and west of 5th Avenue is the "West Side". The two neighborhoods lying on either side of Central Park are called "Upper East Side" and "Upper West Side".
The numbered "Streets" of Manhattan running east to west begin with 1st Street just above Greenwich Village, which extend all the way up to 218th Street at the northern end of Uptown. Meanwhile, "Avenues" running from north to south begin with 1st Avenue on the East Side, which extend up to 12th Avenue on the West Side along the Hudson River.
These numbered Avenues are mixed with named Avenues such as Park, Lexington, and Madison Avenue. Also, you should remember that Broadway is a bit unusual. It is a typical north to south avenue in Downtown, but angles slightly to the west just around 14th St. and continues on up to 79th Street.
Building Numbers, especially on the Avenues, often do not follow a logical pattern. When asking directions, always use the nearest intersection of Streets and Avenues. For instance, say like "42nd Street" and "5th Avenue".
Subways and buses are available in virtually every few blocks. The fare is $2 a ride (w/ one free transfer) and you need to purchase a MetroCard. Learn More It should be noted that Subways and Busses go "uptown" when heading north and go "downtown" when heading south. ("East Side" or "West Side" when crossing the island.)
